Digital skills workshop with ABC Open – storytelling with photos and audio

Tuesday 24th. 10am – 2pm (come for all or part of time). Come and join this ABC Open skills session and learn how to combine your favourite photos with audio to create an audio-visual slideshow. It’s simple, but the results can be powerful. You may want to interview someone from your family or a local personality to add their voice to their portrait. Or you may want to add your own voice to a series of images describing a special experience. Or perhaps just the sounds of nature to a series of landscape shots.  All you need to do is bring your own laptop, PC or Mac, uploaded with the images you’d like to use. Audio can then be recorded on your smartphone and transferred, or directly onto your laptop. ABC Open Illawarra producer Sean O’Brien, with a background in radio features and television documentaries, will lead the workshop. Please contact Sean to book your place. abcopen.illawarra@abc.net.au

Bhante Sujato

“The Importance and Place of Meditation in the Modern World”.

Are you struggling with the pace of our modern world? Living and working in today’s society tends to perpetuate a ongoing struggle with balancing family, work and social commitments and leaves us little time to reflect upon life and find some sense of meaning and peace. As much as we may have the sincere intent to find calm and meditate, we often find ourselves challenged to sit still on a regular basis. The importance and place of mindfulness meditation for leading a balanced and fulfilling life is especially relevant today as it ever has been.

This half-day meditation retreat workshop offers you the opportunity to take a moment in life to find an island of stillness.  Listen to special guest speaker, Bhante Sujato, Abbott of Santi Forest Monastery in Bundanoon, talk about how mindfulness meditation can be applied to the everyday living experiences we are challenged with and how to find regular place for it in your life.  As well as being a meditator and teacher, Bhante Sujato is a scholar of early Buddhism, with several books and essays of original and often ground-breaking research.

Structure: The workshop will be a meditative retreat offering several sessions of meditation interlaced with reflections by Bhante Sujato.

When: 9am – 12pm, 21st January 2012

Where: The Bushland Chapel, Helensburgh
94 Parkes Street, Helensburgh NSW

Cost: Dana (expressions of generosity).  All proceeds go to the Santi Forest Monastery.

A season of regular screenings of environmental docos are planned at the Chapel starting September  and hosted by the Northern Illawarra Sustainability group. Titles include “The Economic of Happiness”, “Our Generation”, “Split Estate” and “The End of the Line”. The chapel has previously screened the spectacular “Home” movie, on climate change,  and the wonderful goal seam gas documentary “Gaslands”.

BOOK STUDY

Study group to commence

A study group is currently planned to commence on the last Friday of September. This will be at the home of Ross and Bron in Thirroul, and it is planned to hold it once a month. Borg’s new book on Paul will be studied first, and copies of the work have been ordered and will be paid by the chapel. There will be a few extra copies. Please check for arrival of books and confirmation of first meeting.

We have commenced a library. The following books can be borrowed. Richard A Horsley, Jesus and Empire; John Crossan, Jesus – a revolutionary biography; and Marcus Borg, Speaking Christian. Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power.

Meet Paul Again . . . for the First Time

Continuing in the tradition of The Last Week and The First Christmas, world-renowned New Testament scholars Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan use the best of biblical and historical scholarship to expose the church’s conspiracy to silence Jesus’s most faithful disciple, the apostle Paul.”

7.30 at home of Ross and Bron, 1 Waves Street Thirroul. resuming February 2012. The next book will be Borg’s Speaking Christian. A sound and pleasing look at keywords. We hope to share different words for individual contributions. Hard cover editions of this good book have been ordered – they will available for discounted purchase – probably $10 each – a bargain!!

The chapel has a monthly bushwalking program – 1st Sunday afternoon of the month.

  1. We are still waiting delivery of the books. I think Friday 30 September is current date, to be held at Ross and Bron place at Thirroul. The books should arrive by September 21, with time to distribute and read. Suzanne Vernon will lead the first chapter. The place and date will be updated and confirmed asap.
